The Random Encounter is divided into two sections - The World Map, and Battle Sequences. On The World Map, the player controls Sam Stone (and assumingly his party members as well), by walking around levels, finding treasures and weapon chests and walking into encounters with enemies. There will be 9 level maps, spread over 3 distinct worlds. During the Battle Sequences, the player sees Sam and his party members - Bam and Bim, constantly running backwards with the enemies chasing after them. During these sequences, the player uses his turn to issue orders to his party - attacking the enemy with specific weapons in specific locations or using items.

Keeping with the spirit of the Serious Sam series, the number of enemies in the battle sequences is massive (more than most RPGs). There are also large boss battles. Also, unlike most RPGs, there is no leveling or grinding system. The player advances and becomes stronger only by finding and collecting more items and more powerful weapons.
